Deutscher Holzbaupreis 2021

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner, in cooperation with the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations of the City of Munich, has been awarded the Deutscher Holzbaupreis 2021 in the category Concepts/Products for the project "Ökologische Mustersiedlung Prinz-Eugen-Park".

For the first time, the "Deutscher Holzbaupreis 2021" honors the process for the conception as well as the implementation of the housing estate as currently the largest coherent timber housing estate.

The award is associated with high recognition for the Chair of Resource Efficient Building, both for the consistent implementation of research work and for the successful transfer of research results into practice through the cooperation with the city administration (Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations, City of Munich), which was funded within the framework of two DBU research projects and has since developed a great practical impact. The work clearly highlights how a transfer of knowledge into practice can succeed. The expert jury praises: "[...] Therefore, the jury appreciates the interaction of all the different actors and factors that make this model settlement what is now attracting great interest internationally. A remarkable process that should serve as a model for other projects in Germany" (Own Translation).

So far, the Deutscher Holzbaupreis award is considered the most important in Germany for buildings made of wood and enjoys a high status among construction experts. To award the prize, the jury of experts selected the winners from 260 entries in three categories: new buildings, existing buildings and components/concepts. The Holzbaupreis is awarded every two years in the name of the Informationsdienst Holz and under the patronage of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Home Affairs.

The Project: Ökologische Mustersiedlung Prinz-Eugen-Park

With 566 apartments, including various building types and constructions, Prinz-Eugen-Park (Munich) is currently the largest wooden housing estate in Germany. In the book "Wohnquartier in Holz - Mustersiedlung in München", Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hafner, together with the editors Sabine Djahanschah and Arnim Seidel from the Fachagentur Holz, draws a positive conclusion: "The project had a lighthouse effect, and other large cities are also interested in the results" (Own Translation).

In the book, the authors describe all aspects of the political and administrative development of the model settlement, practical experiences of its implementation, and present comparative life cycle assessments of the buildings.
