23.12.2021: A Different Way of Building Bridges: “Waschbären” from the Waldschule Visit the Faculty

"Bridges" is the current topic of the "Waschbärenklasse" (raccoon class) at the Waldschule in Querenburg, and so the elementary school students came to visit the faculty to get a firsthand look at the world of experts on the subject.

23.12.2021: Dr.-Ing. Cornelia Kalender appointed President of Windtechnologische Gesellschaft Deutschland: An Interview

Dr.-Ing Cornelia Kalender studied environmental engineering and resource management at the RUB, but only came into contact with the topic of wind during her studies as part of her diploma thesis supervised by Prof.-Dr.-Ing. Höffer, owner of the Wind Engineering and Fluid Mechanics working group. As a student assistant at Niemann Ingenieure working under Prof. Höffer's predecessor em. Prof. Hans-Jürgen Niemann, she was involved in a wide variety of engineering projects at an early stage, including wind tunnel measurements. Hooked by the topic, she started working as a research assistant for Prof. Höffer in spring 2008. In 2014, she received her doctorate on the topic of „Windinduzierter Partikeltransport – Synergetische Kombination von physikalischer und numerischer Simulation“. As a Post Doc at the working group, she continues to work in the areas of computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments for wind flows in the built environment. In November, she was appointed president of the Windtechnologische Gesellschaft Deutschland, a welcome occasion to talk to Dr.-Ing Cornelia Kalender in more detail.

09.12.2021: Review: Academic Year Celebration 2021

Last Friday, December 03, 2021, the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering invited to the annual Academic Year Celebration. Due to the pandemic, the ceremony was transmitted live from the Audimax via zoom. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rüdiger Höffer, Vice Dean of the Faculty, and UI master student Kiara Stein hosted the event.

01.12.2021: Offer for Prospective Students: Digitale Hochschultage

BI or rather UI? Prospective students take note: In December, our study programs Civil Engineering (BI) and Environmental Engineering (UI) will be introducing themselves at the online event Digitale Hochschultage of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum on December 15. Interested students as well as high school students from grade 10 are cordially invited to participate in the free event.

23.11.2021: We introduce: RUBy

The Department of Computing in Engineering welcomes its new team member: RUBy. The robot dog from the manufacturer Boston Dynamics can be used on rough construction sites, climb stairs independently as well as avoid obstacles. This makes it unique in the university landscape.

On November 1, 2021, the new RUB rectorate has started its term of office. Prof. Dr. techn. Günther Meschke, head of the Chair of Statics and Dynamics, has been elected prorector by the RUB University Election Assembly.

As in the past semesters, all procedures can still be handled by e-mail. In the winter semester 2021/22, a face-to-face consultation hour will be offered as needed. 3G status and an appointment are required for the face-to-face consultation. Please make an appointment by e-mail (pruefungsamt-bi@rub.de), stating your matriculation number and a brief description of your concerns, and bring your student ID with green vignette or proof of recovery or current test, as well as an FFP2 mask (not an OP mask).

The research of Prof. Dr. Mark - holder of the Institute of Concrete Structure - contributes to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals issued by the UN until 2030. His research aims to make building with concrete more climate-friendly and resource-efficient, and to preserve and rehabilitate existing structures. More...

19.10.2021: DFG Förderatlas 2021: Our Faculty Ranked the 2nd Place

For two years in a row, our faculty has been ranked number 1 in the DFG Förderranking for universities with the highest DFG grants in engineering sciences. In the latest ranking (covering the years 2017-2019), we made it to 2nd place, just behind the University of Stuttgart. We are delighted about this excellent result!

12.10.2021: Congratulations to Dr. Svenja Fischer for the Tison Award 2021 & the Habilitation at the Chair of Engineering Hydrology and Water Resources Management

Dr. Svenja Fischer and former research associate Phillip Bühler were honored by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) with the "Tison Award" for the scientific publication "Timescale-based flood typing to estimate temporal changes in flood frequencies". The award annually recognizes the best publication by young scientists in the peer-reviewed "Hydrological Science Journal".

12.10.2021: Energy transition: Why the impact on water management should not be ignored

Wind power, hydropower, photovoltaics and other forms of energy generation with low CO2 emissions are supposed to drive the energy transition. But what does this mean for the development of water supply and demand? In the research project "WANDEL - Water Resources as a Significant Factor of the Energy Transition on a Local and Global Level", Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. M. Flörke and the project partners calculated how the new energy mix will affect water availability worldwide. She will explain which conflicts result and why water can become a limiting factor in the next issue of the RUB science magazine "Rubin".

06.10.2021: Start of studies: Get green vignette conveniently at the faculty

If you are vaccinated against or recovered from Covid, you can receive a green sticker for your student identity card to facilitate check-in to on-site courses and activities. The stickers are fraud-proofed in that they cannot be removed without being destroyed.

Since Wednesday, September 29th, a central distribution point for these stickers has been established at Nordforum on campus.Read more here...

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner, in cooperation with the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations of the City of Munich, has been awarded the Deutscher Holzbaupreis 2021 in the category Concepts/Products for the project "Ökologische Mustersiedlung Prinz-Eugen-Park".

05.10.2021: The Voluntary Scientific Year Enters its First Round

With the start of the winter semester 2021/22, the Voluntary Scientific Year at the Ruhr University Bochum has begun for the first time. The one-year initiative enables the selected high school graduates to gain insight into the research projects of the engineering and electrical engineering chairs and to participate in university events such as seminars and lectures.

02.10.2021: Award of the Lüer-Nadel to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Radenberg

During this year's asphalt road conference of the FGSV (Forschungsgesellschaft für Straßen- und Verkehrswesen e. V.), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Radenberg - holder of the chair of traffic route engineering - was awarded the 53rd Lüer-Nadel for his excellent work in the field of asphalt road construction.

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Andreas Vogel was appointed University Professor by the Rector of the RUB Prof. Dr. Axel Schölmerich on Tuesday, 21.09.2021. Effective 01.10.2021 he will hold the professorship for High Performance Computing.

We congratulate him warmly and look forward to further years of successful cooperation.

Due to the rising incidence of corona and based on new guidelines, the Faculty Academic Annual Celebration will be entirely digital. The energy transition includes another important factor along with greenhouse gas emissions: the water footprint. The collaborative project WANDEL therefore investigated the connection between global water resources and the energy transition.

RUB students want to find out what people in Bochum associate with the concept of home. They are calling for public exchange with a photo competition. The submitted images will be collected, curated and exhibited as part of a digital exhibition starting April 30, 2021. In addition, prizes will be awarded to the three best entries.

FACE@RUB is short for Female Academic Entrepreneurs at RUB and is a program explicitly aimed at women (students, alumnae and young academics) interested in founding a start-up. Part of the FACE program is an interdisciplinary summer school to which scientific experts and experts from start-up practice are invited.

02.03.2021: Kickoff event of the specialized information service BAUdigital

Scientific work in the digital age is hardly conceivable without disciplinary networking. New digital methods and technologies in civil engineering, architecture and urbanism (BAU) are closely linked to complex digital models, processes and data of their objects of investigation. In this context - funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) - the specialist information service (FID) BAUdigital is being created as a sustainable digital platform to support scientific communities in networking, research data exchange and publication.

24.02.2021: Building structures and components as naturally grown

The shapes of building components optimized by an algorithm experience an evolutionary process and are comparable to biological processes. Dr.-Ing. Philipp Junker from the Chair of Mechanics - Continuum Mechanics and Dr.-Ing. Dustin Jantos from the Chair of Mechanics - Material Theory have been able to determine this in their research on topology optimization.

19.02.2021: Honorary professorship for Dr. Dieter Lehnen

Since the summer semester 2012, Dr.-lng. Dieter Lehnen has been a lecturer at thefaculty. Students know him from the course "Concrete Structures for Environmental Protection" and the associated excursions. On 15th Febraury 2021, on the initiative of the Chair of Concrete Structures, he was awarded an honorary professorship for his services to the faculty.

18.02.2021: Invitation: Network 'Parents at the RUB'

At the end of last year, a group of motivated parents at the RUB got together to exchange ideas about the difficulties of reconciling science and family. Now they want to build a network for parents and are looking for interested people to join. The initial meeting will take place on March 2 via Zoom.

09.02.2021: New cooperation project for resource-efficient circular economy in municipal civil engineering

Civil engineering is one of the most problematic areas of the construction sector in terms of its impact on the environment. Among other things, this is due to the considerable land and energy consumption and the high emissions caused by civil engineering projects. To counteract this problem, the project Resource Plan for Municipal Civil Engineering (ReKoTi) was launched on February 1, 2021 under the leadership of the Institute for Infrastructure, Water, Resources and Environment (IWARU) at Münster University of Applied Sciences.

02.02.2021: SFB 837 - Membership in the IFC-Tunnel project of the buildingSmart International (bSI) community

The "Industry Foundation Classes" (IFC) are a neutral and software-independent data exchange format for the exchange of models in the context of Building Information Modeling (BIM), which was developed by buildingSmart International (bSI) and accepted as ISO 16739-1:2018. Based on this, several extensions are under development to cover other domains, such as infrastructures. One of these projects "IFC-Tunnel" was initiated by bSI to develop support for digital tunnel models. SFB837 participates in this project both with financial support and through active collaboration in the form of an interdisciplinary team contributing competencies in tunneling, data management, numerical simulation and geostatistics.

28.01.2021: BIM2TWIN - New EU Project Computing in Engineering

Ensuring occupational safety is one of the essential, often underestimated challenges during construction. Since many different influencing factors converge when assessing potential sources of danger, the EU Horizon 2020-funded project BIM2TWIN aims to develop a digital platform that serves as a sound basis for action for those responsible for construction sites. Within the framework of the project, the Chair of Computer Science in Civil Engineering, together with practical partners, is developing various methods and prototypes for the optimal planning and control of construction machinery on construction sites.

19.01.2021: BDB - Call for entries for the 'Student Sponsorship Award 2021'

The future of construction and construction planning will be significantly shaped by those who study at Germany's universities. Students of architecture and civil engineering therefore need special support. This is one of the central concerns of the Association of German Master Builders, Architects and Engineers (BDB). In order to meet this aim, the BDB will again be offering the "Student Sponsorship Award".

A new cooperation project of the Chair of Computing in Engineering is dedicated to the structural inspection in the field of bridge construction with the help of AI. The project is carried out in cooperation with the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt).

In a new joint project entitled "As-built Modeling of Buildings and Infrastructure Structures Using AI to Generate Digital Twins - BIMKIT", partners from research and industry, including the Chair of Computer Science in Civil Engineering headed by Prof. Markus König, want to develop methods that use artificial intelligence (AI) to convert building documents into digital 3D models.
