TANDEM.MINT: Language learning programme for engineering students

25.10.2020

Until 28 October 2020, students of engineering courses can still register for participation in the language tandem in the winter semester 2020/21. This time, Tandem.MINT will be launched with two innovations.

Especially in the current situation, it is a great challenge to get in contact with fellow students and to improve language skills and intercultural competence. With the online version of Tandem.MINT, the organisers want to try to close this gap.

The participants expect two innovations in the programme this time:

On the one hand, the Tandem.MINT will be completely digital this semester so that national and university borders can be crossed. The ELLI team is currently working on a cooperation with Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, USA, to give even more students the opportunity to improve their language skills together with English-speaking participants. Furthermore, a digital tandem also gives students who are currently not in Germany the chance to participate. On the other hand, the CP-creditable option unfortunately has to be dropped this semester.

The fact that the tandem partner is also studying a MINT subject enables him/her to discuss subject-specific topics and to establish a connection to typical contexts of action in his/her studies and to improve his/her technical language skills. In this way, students train for the professional context to work together in multilingual and culturally heterogeneous teams in a subject-related way - and thus acquire key competences for the increasingly internationalised professional world already during their studies.
