Smart Bin Prototype developed by CompEng Students

18.05.2022

CompEng-Studierende entwickeln Prototyp einer intelligenten Mülltonne

Three (former) CompEng students - Tarik Sahin, Hakan Bayer, and Salih Enes Tiryaki - have started a project, developing an intelligent garbage can, which is expected to become a start-up in the future. The idea is to make waste recycling more efficient for consumers, supported by an AI algorithm, and thus to sort waste as purely as possible into recyclable raw materials.

Using a cloud-based solution, the Smart Bin allocates the trash to the designated can in a fraction of a second. The intention is to avoid possible incorrect waste sorting by consumers. Currently, it is envisaged that this system could be located, for example, in offices or public places.

For further developments of their idea, the project team has been supported by a scholarship from the Worldfactory StartUp Center (WSC) since September 2020. Additionally, they were awarded the Gründerstipendium NRW for 6 months in 2021.

An interview with Hakan Bayer and Salih Enes Tiryaki on their Smart Bin can be read on the CompEng website.
