From 29 May 2023 to 01 June 2023, students from the Faculty immersed themselves in exciting large-scale projects in the Dresden area as part of this year's Whitsun Excursion and experienced first-hand the versatility of the engineering profession. The excursion was organised by the chairs of Steel, Lightweight and Composite Construction Steel, Traffic Engineering and Management, and Wind Engineering and Fluid Mechanics.

At the start of the excursion, the participants were able to look forward to the Young Engineers Colloquium 2023 and in the evening watch the award ceremony of the German Bridge Prize live.

The following day, the group was treated to an extensive tour of the Gottleubatal Bridge construction site (Pirna bypass). The federal road 172 from Dresden to Bad Schandau is an important connecting axis from the state capital Dresden to the economic area of Saxon Switzerland. The federal road is also of great importance for tourism and border traffic with the Czech Republic. As a result, this supraregional traffic constantly backs up on the B 172, causing noise and pollution. In order to relieve the traffic situation, the construction of the new southern bypass Pirna through the Gottleubatal bridge is being implemented.

In the afternoon, the participants were given exciting insights into a current building construction project, the Stadtforum Dresden construction site. Since February 2022, the experts from the joint venture of Ed. Züblin AG and Dreßler Bau GmbH have been constructing the Stadtforum, the new administrative building of the state capital Dresden.

The last day of the excursion offered two more interesting construction sites, the construction site of Dresden's main railway station and the new construction of a motorway in the vicinity of Dresden. The new membrane roof for Dresden Central Station was particularly exciting. In March 2023, the new construction phase for the hall roof renovation was started, for which around 14,000 square metres of membrane will be installed this year.

After four exciting excursion days, impressive impressions and a look at satisfied faces, one can conclude without a doubt: The excursion offered a multifaceted insight into the tasks of engineers.
