Building for the future: Girls' Day 2024

02.05.2024

Girls' Day 2024 - 1

From bridge building and dam breaches to a personal memento, a mini concrete auditorium - on 25 April 2024, interested schoolgirls got to know the diverse fields of work of civil and environmental engineers as part of this year's Girls' Day.

The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering offered interested 8th and 9th grade girls a varied programme at this year's Girls' Day. The programme started with the Chair of Construction Materials, which first provided insights into the various properties and possible applications of concrete as a building material in the concrete laboratory. The programme then focused on practice. The participants produced concrete themselves, dyed it with colour pigments and finally poured it into various formworks. In addition to spheres and hearts, each participant was able to take home a miniature version of the centrepiece of the RUB, the Audimax, as a souvenir. The workshop was rounded off by a guided tour of the KIBKON test hall organised by the Chair of Concrete Structures and an experimental demonstration of the properties of a solid concrete structure.

In the next workshop, organised by the Chair of Structural Mechanics, the participants learned what a structural engineer is and what an important role they play in construction projects. There, the participants were given an overview of bridge properties and construction materials and then designed various bridges themselves. With the help of a simulator, they were able to test whether their designs could withstand different loads.

Over lunch in the canteen together with student representatives, the participants were able to get a taste of university life and familiarise themselves with everyday university life.

How do we make our water bodies fit for the future while floods and droughts become more frequent? What about water quality? At the third station of the day, staff from the Chair of Engineering Hydrology and Water Resources Management demonstrated in their laboratory how dams break during flood events and what challenges climate change poses for water management in the region.

The next Girls' Day will take place on 3 April 2025. Further information can be found on the Girls' Day website.
