On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the BreakING team held its next fireplace evening in the bentonite laboratory of the Chair of Tunnel Engineering, Pipeline Engineering, and Construction Operations. The guest speaker was Dr.-Ing. Janine Pfetzing-Micklich, executive director of the research facility “Center for Interface-Dominated High-Performance Materials (ZGH).”

Former BreakING mentees and mentors, female engineers, students, and other interested individuals gathered for the fireside evening. After everyone arrived and enjoyed drinks and initial conversations, Dr.-Ing. Pfetzing-Micklich shared insights into her personal and professional journey in her keynote address. As the first woman in her family to earn a college degree, she spoke about her path to her Ph.D., which she completed in 2009 at Ruhr University Bochum, as well as her current work in academic administration.

She also shared two thoughts with the participants: “Detours broaden your knowledge of the terrain”—not every detour in one’s professional career is a step backward; rather, it can open up new perspectives and experiences. At the same time, she emphasized that success rarely comes about on its own. Networks, mentors, and mutual exchange can provide important impetus and open doors.

Following the presentation, a relaxed atmosphere with snacks and drinks provided the perfect setting to deepen conversations, make new connections, and wrap up the evening together.

The next round of BreakING with new mentees and mentors will begin in November. BreakING is the mentoring program for female master’s students in the faculty.
