A delegation from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering visited its Chinese partner university, Tongji University in Shanghai, to strengthen academic exchange and further develop existing collaborations.
n addition to collaboration in research and teaching, the program also included a meeting with the faculty’s master’s scholarship recipients, Ali Shabbir (Subsurface Engineering) and Roman Merten (Environmental Engineering), who will be writing their master’s theses at Tongji University during the winter semester of 2026/27.
Exchange on Pioneering Technologies in Civil Engineering
A key focus of the visit was the Sino-German workshop “Wise Civil Engineering Design & Construction,” which took place on October 15, 2026, at the College of Civil Engineering at Tongji University in Shanghai. The event centered on international collaboration and shared perspectives for the further development of civil engineering.
Dr.-Ing. Christoph Baer, Executive Director of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, introduced the Faculty and Ruhr University Bochum and discussed the “Global Competence Certificate in Civil Engineering.” Prof. Dr. techn. Günther Meschke then spoke on “Computational and ML-Driven Modeling in Structural and Tunneling Engineering.” In another presentation, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tamara Nestorović discussed research topics in the mechanics of adaptive systems, including active vibration control, identification, and optimization. In his presentation, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus König focused on the topics of artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital twins in the context of intelligent and sustainable construction.
The program also included presentations by Tongji University on intelligent disaster prevention for civil infrastructure, reliability-based structural design, condition monitoring of bridges, and the dynamics of rock-ice avalanches. The workshop thus provided a wide range of opportunities for professional exchange among the participants.
German Weeks 2026
Prof. Dr. techn. Günther Meschke, Vice Rector for Research and Transfer at Ruhr University Bochum, attended the opening of the German Weeks 2026 at Tongji University as a guest of honor. German Weeks bring together science, culture, and social exchange and provide a platform for German-Chinese cooperation. Prof. Meschke’s participation underscores the importance of the long-standing partnership between Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) and Tongji University.
This partnership is also being systematically expanded at the institutional level: In March 2024, the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum and the College of Civil Engineering at Tongji University founded the Sino-D-A-CH Research Center of Smart Civil Engineering under the umbrella of the Sino-German University (CDH). In October of the same year, Prof. Meschke, as one of the directors, participated in the center’s grand opening ceremony in Shanghai. The center lays the groundwork for further joint research on smart and sustainable infrastructure.
