Civil Engineering , B.Sc.

The bachelor's degree program in Civil Engineering covers the design, construction and operation of sophisticated structures. Civil engineers can be found wherever knowledge of civil engineering, traffic engineering and water engineering is indispensable. Planning, construction, consulting and operation as well as economic and ecological thinking and acting are among the central tasks. The six-semester bachelor's program provides the basic knowledge and the scientific methods which are required to develop engineering solutions.

Digitalization in construction, resource-efficient building, recycled building materials in road construction and much more - Bochum's engineers are conducting groundbreaking research. With engineering studies at the faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, we create an innovative environment.

The study program at a glance

The more confident you feel in math and science and the more you enjoy technical challenges, the better. You do not need any advanced courses in your school subjects. A high degree of independence and the ability to learn on your own, to follow up on teaching content, and to create an individual time plan are essential. In addition to your curiosity about technical issues, you should enjoy solving tricky problems and have a strong spatial imagination.

The bachelor's degree program in Civil Engineering is open admission. Thus, enrollment is possible online without an application procedure for each winter semester.

An 8-week pre-study internship is required for the program, which must be proven by the time the bachelor thesis is registered. We recommend completing the internship, if possible, before you start your studies.

The Department of Mathematics offers a pre-university mathematics course for future engineering students. This pre-course is designed to prepare you for the mathematics requirements of the first semester by introducing basic mathematical concepts and reviewing important elements of high school material. You can find more information here.

Information on the course of studies such as the examination regulations, the curriculum and the module handbook of the program can be found in the download area. In particular, the curriculum describes the organizational and content sequence of the study program and lists the compulsory and the elective modules. Detailed information on the modules that must be taken in the program can be found in the module handbook.

Your future employers could include construction companies, engineering and planning offices, public authorities and associations, universities and research institutes, public utilities, water supply and disposal companies, traffic and road construction companies, plant operators, energy suppliers, industrial companies, power plants, and many more.

Your possible areas of focus may include design / construction, economic and environmental thinking and action, computer simulations, sustainable construction, or materials analysis / materials research.

Enrollment is only possible for the winter semester. For more information on online enrollment, please visit the website of the Admissions Office.

The general deadlines for enrollment and re-registration as well as lecture times can be found here.

For a good start into your studies, the student council offers a first semester tutor-program. More Information can be found here.
