Register now: Whitsun excursion 2025

16.04.2025

Pfingstexkursion 2025 - Ankündigung U5

From June 10 to June 13, 2025, students of the Faculty will gain exclusive insights into exciting large-scale construction projects as well as various sub-areas and areas of responsibility of the versatile engineering profession as part of this year's Whitsun excursion. More about the program and registration here...

Participants in this year's Whitsun excursion can expect a varied program.

On the way to Frankfurt, the participants will make their first stops at the A45 Rahmede viaduct north of Lüdenscheid, which is currently under construction, and the Biggetalsperre, one of the largest reservoirs in Germany.

On the following day, the major construction project of the U5 extension in Frankfurt, which will connect Frankfurt's largest new district, the Europaviertel, to the city's subway network, and the Regional Tangent West (RTW), a rail transport project currently under construction to improve public transport in the Rhine-Main region, are on the agenda.

The participants will then continue towards Wiesbaden and Mendig. There they will visit the Salzbachtal bridge on the A66 in the Biebrich district of Wiesbaden and the deepest storage and fermentation cellar in the world, a cave in Mendig on Lake Laach.

On the last day, the group of participants will travel to Cologne and gain access to the extension of the Wallraff-Richartz Museum, which was planned as an exhibition space for around 170 works of art from the Fondation Corboud, but whose construction work has been postponed indefinitely due to significant underground cavities.

Following the collapse of the Cologne City Archives in 2009, an underground track replacement for the north-south light rail system is being built on this site. The participants will also take a close look at this construction site.

The personal contribution for the excursion is 90 euros. Registrations are possible until 30.04.2025 at diethard.koenig@rub.de.

This year's Whitsun excursion is being organized by the Chairs of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics as well as Engineering Hydrology and Water Management.
