On June 26, 2025, the bentonite laboratory was transformed into a meeting place for inspiration, exchange, and empowerment during the crossmedia event “INGQueens – Women Engineers in Transition: Retrospect, Insight, and Outlook”.
Numerous current and former members of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering came together to honor the career paths of professors Stefanie Reese, Tamara Nestorovic, Martina Flörke, Inka Mueller, Annette Hafner, and Johanna Waimann, to jointly reflect on the role of women in engineering—past, present, and future—and to celebrate a very special anniversary: 25 years ago, Stefanie Reese, now Rector of the University of Siegen, became the first woman appointed as a professor in the faculty.
The event was supported by both the university leadership and the faculty: Wanda Gerding, the university’s central gender equality officer, conveyed greetings from the Pro-Rector for Diversity, Inclusion, and Talent Development. Vice Dean Daniel Balzani highlighted the honoree’s outstanding academic achievements in his laudation.
In moderated panel discussions led by Katinka Netzer (Writing Center), Professors Reese, Flörke, Hafner, Mueller, Waimann, and other women engineers spoke openly about their career experiences, challenges, and achievements. Speakers included Monika Grünewald (Vice President Sales, Flowserve Corporation and BreakING mentor), Cornelia Kalender (Postdoc, Managing Director of KalWin – Engineering, Chair of the Wind Technology Society), Joana Bombe (doctoral candidate at the Chair of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, and Environmental Geotechnics), and Anna-Lena Schürmann (civil engineering student).
Running alongside the event, an exhibition on Level 04 of the IC building attracted additional attention: the portraits and career paths of the professors impressively illustrated how they have shaped the field of civil and environmental engineering at RUB and beyond. The exhibition will be on display at various levels of the IC building in the coming weeks. Click here for more information about the exhibition.
Accompanying the exhibition, the INGQueens Podcast is available via the homepage and on Spotify.
