13.12.2023: COP28: UN Climate Change Conference with RUB participation

Husam Sameer Al-Baghdadi, postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of Engineering Hydrology and Water Resources Management, was invited by the World Green Building Council to participate in the workshops and events at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference 2023 (COP28), which took place in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December 2023.

12.12.2023: Protective ice jacket in tunnelling

PhD student Rodolfo Javier Williams Moises from the Department of Statics and Dynamics explains why it is advantageous to deep-freeze a tunnel construction site for a short period of time in the current issue of the science magazine Rubin.

04.12.2023: "Timber construction GIS" project wins Humboldtⁿ Award

With the municipal timber construction information system - "Holzbau-GIS" for short - Prof. Annette Hafner and her colleagues at the Chair of Resource-Efficient Construction have developed a tool that can be used to calculate additional greenhouse gas reduction potential that can be achieved by building with wood. On 4 December 2023, the "Holzbau-GIS" project was awarded the Humboldtⁿ Initiative Sustainability Prize.

24.11.2023: New projekt "BIMBreitband" started

Even though broadband expansion is progressing in Germany, there is still a great need for acceleration. As part of the new BIMBreitband project, the Chair of Computing in Engineering is working with other project partners on digital models to significantly improve the supply of high-speed internet.

17.11.2023: IAESTE internship: International guests at the Chair of Tunnelling, Pipeline Construction and Construction Management

Monica Akyeampong from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, and Fernando Fogliatti from the National Technological University - Regional Faculty of Santa Fe, Argentina, are currently completing a three-month internship at the Chair of Tunneling and Construction Management as part of the IAESTE organisation. The stay is supported by the Collaborative Research Centre 837.

15.11.2023: Prof. Martina Flörke is one of the most cited researchers in the world

Six researchers from Ruhr-Universität Bochum have been identified as the most frequently cited researchers worldwide - including Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martina Flörke, Head of the Chair of Engineering Hydrology and Water Resources Management. This is according to the current list of "Highly Cited Researchers 2023" from 15 November 2023.

09.11.2023: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner in 3sat documentary

Whether as a building material or as fuel - wood is more in demand than ever as a resource. In the 3sat television programme "Makro", the "greed for wood" is contrasted with the limited wood stocks in the forests. In the documentary, experts explain why and how wood should be used - including Prof. Annette Hafner, Head of the Chair of Resource-Efficient Building.

06.11.2023: Guest lecture: MIT develops supercapacitor for energy storage

Interested parties are cordially invited to the lecture by Prof Franz-Josef Ulm (MIT, USA) on the topic "If it's Magic*... Carbon-cement supercapacitors as a scalable bulk energy storage solution for the energy transition", in which Prof Ulm will talk about exciting research work on the future role of cementitious materials for the energy transition. The lecture will take place today (06.11.2023) at 14:00 in the ZEMOS building of the RUB (next to building ID).

02.11.2023: Tunnelling: Master's students on a construction site excursion

On 4 July 2023, students of the Faculty's Master's programmes in Subsurface Engineering and Civil Engineering, led by the Chair of Tunnelling, Pipeline Construction and Construction Management, visited two exciting construction projects at the same time: the TBM tunnelling project Grubenwasserkanal Ibbenbüren and the HDD construction site Exeler Rheine.

24.10.2023: How heavy rain affects the water quality of rivers

Due to climate change, extreme weather events are occurring more frequently and more intensively. Ammanuel Bekele Tilahun, a doctoral student at the Chair of Engineering Hydrology and Water Management, is investigating what impact this has on the water quality of rivers. As a doctoral student, he is also part of the EU-wide training network "inventWater".

24.10.2023: Hello and goodbye: Farewell to the last FWJ participants and welcome to the new ones

For some it was time to say goodbye, for others it is the beginning of a new exciting phase of life after high school graduation: While for the 23 participants of the year 2022/23 it was time to say goodbye on September 21, 2023, the start of the winter semester for the 19 high school graduates of the new year 2023/24 was the beginning of an exciting time at the university and the immersion into student life. We warmly welcome the participants to our faculty!

23.10.2023: SPP 2187 Summer School

From 25 to 29 September 2023, the Summer School of the SPP 2187 of the second funding period took place in Körbecke at Lake Möhne, where around 20 participants from the subprojects exchanged ideas on SPP-relevant topics in expert lectures and practical workshops.

20.10.2023: BreakING: Second round started

With a successful kick-off event, the mentoring programme for female Master's students BreakING at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering entered its second round on 12 October 2023.

16.10.2023: Sustainability Week

From 16 to 20 October 2023, the Sustainability Week will take place at the Ruhr-University for the first time. The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering is participating as part of an interactive sustainability market.

13.10.2023: International research project "inventWater": Training School at the RUB

From 18 to 22 September 2023, the fourth Training School in the research project "inventWater" took place at RUB under the title "Managing water in complex anthropogenic landscapes".

05.10.2023: Euro-Par 2023: Best Paper Award

Poria Saberi, Günther Meschke and Andreas Vogel were awarded with the "Best Paper Award" at 29th International European Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing (Euro-Par 2023) in Limassol, Cyprus.

22.09.2023: Energy transition: Green methane from sewage treatment plants

The two working groups of Prof. Dr. Ulf-Peter Apfel and Dr.-Ing. Tito Gehring, research associates at the Chair of Urban Water Management and Environmental Engineering, have developed an innovative technology that enables sewage treatment plants to produce methane from carbon dioxide in an environmentally friendly way. This can be fed into the existing natural gas infrastructure without adaptation.

15.09.2023: Guest lecture: Numerical approaches for the design of fibre reinforced concrete structures

On 11 October 2023, the Chair of Structural and Dynamics welcomes Prof. Joaquim A. O. Barros, member of ISISE (Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering) and professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minho in Portugal, to the Faculty. Interested parties are cordially invited to his lecture "Numerical approaches for the design of fibre reinforced concrete structures".

15.09.2023: Tandem.MINT: Language learning programme for engineering students

The language tandem programme Tandem.MINT enables students of scientific and technical degree programmes to learn languages individually and subject-related: In exchange with their tandem partners, who speak their target language as a native language or at a high level, students can expand their foreign language skills and at the same time test their abilities in intercultural communication.

On 30 November 2023, the research area "Subsurface Engineering and Modelling" invites Master students, PhD students and young postdocs to the event FUSED (From Underground to Surface: Energy Provision and Distribution) at the Event Centre of the Ruhr-Uni Bochum.

25.08.2023: Model-based approval in road construction

As part of the new project "BeGeBIM", the Chair of Computing in Engineering headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus König is working on accelerating the approval processes in road construction through digital models.

11.08.2023: Patrick Staubach receives Dr. Heinrich Kost Award

Patrick Staubach receives the Dr. Heinrich Kost Award for his dissertation prepared at the Chair of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics.

07.08.2023: Studienbrücke: MINT-Academy 2023

After a three-year break, the Studienbrücke program took place again on August 3, 2023. 35 students from the USA, South America, EECA and Asia visited the engineering faculties of the Ruhr University Bochum as part of the program. Participants gained, for instance, interesting insights into the laboratory of the Chair of Highway and Road Engineering.

03.08.2023: Excursion to Hambach Open Cast Mine

On 25 July 2023, the Chair of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics organised a field trip to the Hambach open-cast mine. In addition to students from the master’s programmes Subsurface Engineering and Civil Engineering, some PhD students of the Chair took part.

24.07.2023: BreakING: Closing event

On 13 July 2023, the first round of the mentoring programme "BreakING" came to an end. This time, the mentees took the lead and organised a closing evening including a homemade buffet and a small programme.

14.07.2023: Drinking water in the I series can be used again

After elevated lead levels in the drinking water in the I-series buildings, the water may now be used again.

13.07.2023: Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner in the TV programme "KlimaZeit"

In the television programme "KlimaZeit", produced by Hessischer Rundfunk and Südwestrundfunk, Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner, Head of the Chair for Resource Efficient Building, answers questions on the topic of wood as a sustainable building material.

11.07.2023: Alumni Trip to the Mekong

In March/April 2023, the "Mekong Summit 2023" of the Mekong River Commission took place in Vientiane/Laos, to which Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Harro Stolpe travelled together with former DAAD scholarship holders. The focus was on water management in times of climate change.

Prof. Annette Hafner, Head of the Chair for Resource Efficient Building and member of the Advisory Council for Forest Policy, explains in the article "Was für das Bauen mit Holz spricht" (What speaks for building with wood) on tagesschau.de why she advises building with wood and why a quick harvest of timber plays a major role in this.

26.06.2023: CompEng Berlin Excursion 2023

On the weekend between 9th and 11th June 2023, the CompEng Coordination Office together with 39 students undertook the annual excursion to Berlin.

26.06.2023: Project Office Annual Report 2022

The Project Office of the Faculty (PBU) offers students a comprehensive range of support services. All last year's activities of the PBU have been published in an annual report and can now be read.

26.06.2023: Review: Whitsun Excursion 2023

From 29 May 2023 to 01 June 2023, students from the Faculty immersed themselves in exciting large-scale projects in the Dresden area as part of this year's Whitsun Excursion and experienced first-hand the versatility of the engineering profession. The excursion was organised by the chairs of Steel, Lightweight and Composite Construction Steel, Traffic Engineering and Management, and Wind Engineering and Fluid Mechanics.

On 28 June 2023 at 3 p.m., our Bachelor's degree programmes "Civil Engineering" and "Environmental Engineering" will present themselves at the online event "Digital University Days" of the Ruhr University Bochum. Interested parties are cordially invited to attend the free event.

12.06.2023: UI Orientation Day

On June 19 at 4:00 p.m., this year's UI Orientation Day for third-year students and those interested in a master's degree will take place at HIB. Responsible professors will present UI bachelor's and master's specializations in terms of both content and perspective. Afterward, there will be a barbecue at the barbecue area of HZO. Students will have the opportunity to connect with each other and chat with alumni.

Last Monday, 12 June 2023, interested pupils were given an exciting insight into the apprenticeship as a building materials tester at the RUB as part of the career exploration days.

26.05.2023: First Bachelor's graduate in "Environmental Engineering"

The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering congratulates Mr. Ruben Herz as the first Bachelor's graduate in the degree programme "Environmental Engineering" (UI). Mr Herz explains in a short interview why he has chosen UI and what is next for him.

24.05.2023: "BreakING" - Mentoring programme for female Master's students enters the second round

Just in time for Diversity Day, the mentoring programme for female Master's students at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering "Breaking the Glass Ceiling - early installation of professional networks for female engineers" is starting its second round. Those interested can apply until 30 June 2023.

22.05.2023: German Timber Construction Award 2023

Together with Federal Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Construction Klara Geywitz, Prof.'in Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner, Head of the Chair of Resource Efficient Construction, as Chair of the Jury, presented the German Timber Construction Award 2023. The award ceremony took place on 16 May 2023 as part of the world's leading trade fair for the international woodworking and wood processing industry, LIGNA, in Hanover.

19.05.2023: Mentoring³ Program for Female Postdocs

In fall 2023, the Research Academy Ruhr (RAR) will start the next round with its two-year mentoring³ program. As young female scientists, postdocs can exchange ideas with experienced scientists* about their professional development and gain informal knowledge about structures and rules in the scientific community. Applications are possible from 08.05.2023 - 09.06.2023.

15.05.2023: Green methane as an energy source

A current research project of the Chairs of Urban Water Management and Environmental Engineering (Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering) and Inorganic Chemistry (Faculty of Chemistry) together with Fraunhofer Umsicht aims to develop an electrochemical-microbial system for the implementation of a decentralised power-to-gas concept in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

12.05.2023: Structural behaviour in case of fire

An essential aspect in the design and dimensioning of structures is structural fire protection. As part of a new DFG project, Mehmed Numanović, a doctoral student at the Chair of Steel, Lightweight and Composite Construction, is investigating the load-bearing capacity and fire behaviour of steel-concrete beam structures in order to optimise a standard for the fire protection of buildings.

On 27 April 2023, we welcomed interested female pupils to this year's Girls' Day at the Chair of Building Materials as part of the workshop "Concrete is colourful!".

04.05.2023: Start of the vocatium 2023 trade fair

On 25/26 April 2023, the start of the vocational training and study fair vocatium took place in Gelsenkirchen, where the three engineering faculties of the RUB presented themselves to interested students with "AllesING!".

03.05.2023: Change at the top of the faculty: Prof. Wichern officially appointed Dean of the Faculty

Today, 03.05.2023, Prof. Marc Wichern, holder of the Chair of Urban Water Management and Environmental Engineering, was officially appointed by Rector Martin Paul as the new Dean of the Faculty. He takes over from Prof. Markus Knobloch, holder of the Chair of Steel, Lightweight and Composite Construction. Rector Paul thanked Prof. Knobloch for his successful and committed work as Dean, and the Faculty joins in this thanks.

25.04.2023: Cross of Honour for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria for Prof. Dr. techn. Günther Meschke

On Monday, 17 April 2023, Prof. Dr. techn. Günther Meschke was awarded the Cross of Honour for Science and Art of the Republic of Austria in Vienna by the Austrian Minister for Education, Science and Research, Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin Polaschek.

21.04.2023: Minister Mrs. Ina Scharrenbach visits the faculty on 20th April 2023

On the occasion of her visit to the Chair of Computer Science in Civil Engineering on 20th April 2023, the faculty was pleased about an inspiring exchange between the Minister for Home, Municipal Affairs, Construction and Digitalisation of the State of NRW, Mr.s Ina Scharrenbach, and the, holder of the Chair of Computing in Engineering, Prof. Markus König.

20.04.2023: VSK.software wins Start-up special prize

In the nationwide competition "Built on IT - Construction Professions with a Future", the Bochum-based start-up VSK.software, which was created on the basis of research work at the Chair of Computing in Engineering, wins the special start-up prize with its product BIMpermit.

17.04.2023: PROMOS 2023: Application Deadline until June 1, 2023

The PROMOS program 2023 will award scholarships to RUB students who will attend an exchange program at an international partner university of RUB, an internship abroad or a stay abroad to write their final thesis in the winter semester 2023/24. The last of the three application phases for the 2023 funding year ends on June 1, 2023.

04.04.2023: Whitsun excursion 2023

Register now for the last places on the Whitsun excursion from Monday, 29 May 2023 to Thursday, 1 June 2023. In addition to visiting current construction projects in the fields of bridge construction, structural engineering and road construction, the programme includes a conference for young engineers from science and practice as well as participation in the award ceremony for the German Bridge Construction Prize in Dresden.

03.04.2023: Industry-oriented Start-up Talk for Engineering Students

On April 19, 2023, the Smart Systems incubator will host an event at the RUB Makerspace around the topic of innovation, founding and building your own start-up in the field of engineering. Industry-related start-ups are invited to share their individual start-up paths. Afterward, there will be the opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas and network.

03.04.2023: Excursion: International Master's Students at Autobahn Westfalen

Last week, 25 international master students of civil engineering from Croatia, Northern Macedonia and Portugal visited the Dillenburg branch of the Autobahn Westfalen - as part of a European cooperation program (Erasmus+) - under the supervision of the faculty as well as the Bauhaus University Weimar. In addition, the students visited the A45 replacement project of the Bornbach and Bechlingen viaducts.

On 28 March 2023, the 12th RuhrGeo Day will take place under the topic "Reconstruction of the Emscher System - Geotechnical Experiences" at the Ruhr University Bochum. Here you can find the programme and further details about the event.

20.03.2023: Project day: Bochum pupils visit the faculty

Organised by the Chair of Urban Water Management and Environmental Engineering, last Thursday (16 March 2023) prospective A-level students from the Lessing School in Bochum were given a wide range of insights into the tasks of civil and environmental engineers.

15.03.2023: Get-together for International Women's Day

On the occasion of this year's International Women's Day on 08.03.2023, the Student Councils Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Computational Engineering invited all interested parties to a get-together, the focus of which was the informal exchange about gender-relevant issues.

13.03.2023: New enclosure for shotcrete test stand "SCOTT"

The Chair of Tunnelling and Construction Management has been operating the Sprayed Concrete Testing Unit for Tunnelling (SCOTT) in the KIBKON hall since the mid-1980s. Now, after long planning, the installation of the new enclosure of the sprayed concrete test stand took place.

13.03.2023: Plenary Meeting of the Civil Engineering Student Council

On Thursday, March 16, 2023, the BauIng student council invites you to its next plenary meeting. The main topic on the agenda of the plenary meeting will be the election of the new student council. The event will take place at 5 p.m. in the Komm-Raum IC 03/173 and invites you to a cozy get-together afterward. Interested students are cordially invited to participate in shaping the plenary meting, to vote or to be elected.

03.03.2023: Online survey on "turbo roundabouts"

For research work on "turbo roundabouts", Julian Schmitz, research assistant at the Chair of Transport - Planning and Management, together with colleagues from the Technische Universität Dresden, invites everyone with a driving licence to take part in an online survey. After extensive analyses of traffic and accidents at turbo roundabouts, the online survey will be used to develop further potential for optimisation concerning reservations, signage and orientation at such roundabouts.

22.02.2023: TANDEM.MINT: Language learning programme for engineering students

The language tandem programme offers ING students at RUB an individual and subject-related form of language learning. In an exchange with a MINT tandem partner who speaks the target language as a native speaker or at a high level, language skills can be expanded in a subject-related context and specialist vocabulary can be acquired. Interested students can register until 9 April 2023.

14.02.2023: Energy saving measures: Audimax closed and weekend operation on Saturdays and Sundays

In order to continue saving energy, additional measures are being implemented at the RUB: The Audimax will remain closed until the end of the winter semester 2023/24. Campus-wide, there will be a switch to weekend operation from 1 March 2023, so that there will be no public traffic in the other buildings on Saturdays and Sundays. Central controls in the buildings for heating, ventilation and lighting will be adjusted and events will be clustered in certain buildings. The University Library is also affected and will close two hours earlier each day from 1 March. Read more here...

06.02.2023: Info event for engineering students: "Career paths after the Master's degree"

After the Master's degree into practice or into science? On 30 March 2023 from 3 pm, the three Engineering Faculties invite their students to the information event "Career paths after the Master's degree". In addition to general presentations by the Career Service, the RUB Research School and the WORLDFACTORY Start-up Center, participants can expect reports from practice and science as well as a direct exchange with alumni and doctoral candidates.

On 27 April 2023, the nationwide Girls' Day will once again take place at RUB. Three chairs of the Faculty will offer pupils from 8th to 10th grade an insight into their fields of work and research in exciting workshops. Those interested can register now.

16.01.2023: Prof. Annette Hafner Appointed for Third Term

For another three years, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Annette Hafner - head of the Chair of Resource Efficient Construction - continues her successful work in the Scientific Advisory Board for Forest Policy. The advisory board advises the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture on shaping the framework conditions for sustainable forest management.

12.01.2023: NPS® Composite Structure - A Sustainable, Efficient and Flexible Construction Solution

On Monday, January 30, 2023, the Chair of Steel, Lightweight and Composite Construction will host a seminar on the innovative NPS Composite Construction by Tecnostrutture. Participation is offered both online and in attendance.
